About Us

The Yorkton and District Horticultural Society is made up of enthusiastic gardeners at all stages of gardening skill, from novice first-time gardeners to seasoned green-thumbs!  Everyone is welcome, because we all know that we can learn from one another, no matter how little or how much time we have spent out in the garden!

We have been proud to be part of the community since 1906.  In September of that year, a group of enthusiastic members assembled their first flower show at Yorkton City Hall.  It is a testament to their spirit that in spite of the many difficulties and hardships of their everyday lives, they still found the time and energy to take time to enjoy their gardens, display the bounty with pride, and to realize that the young Yorkton needed such an outlet.  And thankfully, our City Fathers recognized that amid the struggle of establishing a community on the prairies, there still must be time for appreciation of beauty and culture.

Fast forward, if you will, to the present time.  The Society has undergone many changes over the years.  While the focus of the group has always been learning and appreciation of horticulture, the approach to this end has now shifted.  Once made up of many farm wives with acre-sized gardens, the group has gone through a metamorphosis born of changing lifestyles and interests.

Today’s members are all ages, men and women, with many horticultural interests.  Some have large gardens, some have small gardens, and some have their “garden” on a balcony or deck.  Actually, some don’t even have a garden at all!

But the common thread weaving through the group is the love of horticulture and the desire to learn more.

Regular meetings are held once a month, the third Wednesday of each month, with the exception of July, August, December, and January.  Each meeting features an interesting speaker or presentation.  Throughout the year, we also have added special events, including spring and fall plant sales, and our Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Display Show in August.

New members are always welcome, and you don’t have to be a member to attend the meetings.  If the topic of one of our speakers interests you, you are most welcome to come to the meeting!

If you are interested in gardening, we’d love to meet you!  So come on, get growing!
